A former car breaker’s yard, The Gate House, is now an impressive architect’s studio and forms the arched gateway to the award-winning Tin House from Henning Stummel.
The building’s beautifully proportioned and load-bearing archway supports Henning Stummel’s personal studio situated directly above. Having worked with us on the Tin House project where we provided bespoke Neo Rooflights, Henning Stummel approached The Rooflight Co. for rooflights on his own personal studio.
The stunning double row of The Original Conservation Rooflights linked side by side, allowing the joining structural supports between the casements to be kept to a minimum. Externally, the signature features of The Conservation Rooflight from The Rooflight Co. complement the Victorian façades along the residential street. Internally, the charming and intimate space is adorned with natural light. The authentic manual winders, accessed with an extension handle, add to the experience of interacting with the rooflights and the studio space, providing essential ventilation to the studio for its inhabitants.
This project gallery captures the striking relationship between old and new, showcasing how carefully detailed Conservation Rooflights enhance the studio’s historic character while supporting the contemporary expression of the wider Tin House project. Explore the interplay of light, structure and form that defines this unique workspace.
Henning Stummel’s clever and innovative use of space has resulted in a stunning entrance to his award winning project Tin House, as well as creating a unique studio, basking in sunshine from above and ventilation throughout.

The stunning double row of The Original Conservation Rooflights included three casements per row fitted to a singular baseplate, allowing the joining structural supports between the casements to be kept to a minimum.
Externally, the signature features of The Conservation Rooflight from The Rooflight Co complement the Victorian façades along the residential street. Having retained the highest number of original features beyond the well-known glazing bars and top-hinged design, the finer details are a poetic representation of the level of attention to detail Henning applied across the project. The fine lines of the Conservation Rooflights are mirrored in the vertical standing seam roof. The glazing clips and steel frame were colour matched to the earthy red tones of the roof, thoughtfully planned to sit flush with the roofline.
Internally, the building reveals a surprising transformation. Entering through the side of the archway and up the stairs, visitors are met with a warm, bright and romantic space. The charming studio is adorned with natural light, creating an ideal environment for focus and creativity. The authentic manual winders, accessed with an extension handle, enhance the tactile experience of operating the rooflights while providing essential ventilation.
The Original Conservation Rooflight, with its authentic features, is designed to perform to modern building regulation standards, making it a firm favourite with architects and planners. Sympathetic to the heritage character of the building, the Conservation Rooflight is the perfect accompaniment to any roof, old or new. Its thoughtful design details ensure versatility, allowing linked arrays or adaptations in colour or configuration to suit the unique needs of any project.
Henning Stummel’s clever and innovative use of space has resulted in a stunning entrance to his award-winning Tin House, as well as a unique studio filled with sunshine and natural ventilation.
