Cotswold House

This Grade II Listed Arts & Crafts house in the Cotswolds, originally designed by Norman Jewson, has been sensitively refurbished and extended by Verity & Beverley Architects. The scheme includes restoration of the historic home, a traditional Cotswold stone garage with annex, and a striking contemporary pool pavilion. Central to uniting old and new, The Rooflight Co’s Original Conservation Rooflights were installed across both the traditional and modern additions, bringing natural light into the garage extension and pool house. Seven Conservation Rooflights: one CR08-2, three CR09-2, and three CR14-2 were specified by the architects and installed by Building Restorations Limited. The authentic detailing, slim profile and flush fit of this iconic rooflight design ensured heritage sensitivity while delivering modern performance and light-filled, breathable interiors.

Full Project Summary

This conservation-led refurbishment and extension of a Grade II Listed Arts and Crafts house and its grounds in the Cotswolds reflects a considered integration of contemporary architecture while respecting the original character.

Originally designed by celebrated Arts and Crafts architect Norman Jewson in 1926, the property presented both a historical legacy and architectural sensitivity that needed to be preserved and celebrated. Alongside the restoration of the original building, the scheme included a new traditional Cotswold stone three-bay garage extension with annex and a striking contemporary pool pavilion and pool.

The main design challenge faced by Verity & Beverley Architects was ensuring that both the traditional and modern additions complemented one another and sat comfortably within the setting of a protected heritage property. Any new intervention needed to deliver light-filled, functional spaces suited to contemporary living while also meeting modern building standards.

Maintaining architectural coherence across contrasting styles was key. Rooflights would play an essential role in bringing natural light into these new structures, but their design and performance had to respect the aesthetics of both the historic and modern elements. The solution required a balance between heritage authenticity and modern performance to support long-term sustainability.

To address this challenge, the architect specified The Rooflight Co’s Original Conservation Rooflight across both the traditionally designed garage extension and the contemporary pool pavilion. This approach provided a visually cohesive solution that met the aesthetic and technical needs of the site, while preserving the architectural integrity of the Grade II Listed home.

The Original Conservation Rooflight was chosen for its authentic detailing including glazing clips, slim profile design and ability to sit flush within the roofline, an important feature that kept the rooflights unobtrusive from key sightlines across the grounds. Installed in both pitched slate and Cotswold stone roofs, the conservation rooflights provided a consistent visual across the different architectural forms.

In total, seven Conservation Rooflights were installed across the site: three CR09-2 within the pool pavilion, one CR08-2 above the shower room and three CR14-2 in the roof of the traditional garage and annex extension. Their inclusion brings natural light and ventilation into each new space, creating bright, breathable interiors that align with the original house’s craftsmanship and ethos.

Early engagement was crucial. At RIBA Stage 2, the architect accessed all required technical drawings and dimensions directly from The Rooflight Co website, allowing sizes to be accurately indicated on plans and streamlining the planning process. Conservation and planning officers were reportedly appreciative of the quality and aesthetic authenticity of The Original Conservation Rooflight.

The completed project is a celebration of old and new, where honouring the past is seamlessly integrated with the needs of contemporary living. The Original Conservation Rooflights unified the traditional and contemporary architectural elements, offering authentic design, high performance with a U-Value of 1.4 W/m2K, and an ultra-low profile that aligns beautifully with both old and new roofscapes.

Natural light from above now floods the new structures, giving a sense of openness while respecting the beauty and heritage of the original property. The pool pavilion and garage extension sit confidently within the landscape and feel part of a singular and considered architectural vision.

For the architect, the rooflights delivered exactly what was needed: quality, performance and authenticity. For the homeowner, the result is a fully refurbished and enhanced Cotswolds property designed for comfortable living, entertaining and making the most of the natural light that now defines each space.
