Nestled in the Oxfordshire countryside, this striking 16th-century coaching inn was packed full of character and original features. A sensitive renovation and refurbishment sought to retain the character whilst bringing the building up to date, improving thermal efficiency and creating a warm, snug and cosy atmosphere.
The old, pitched roof windows were replaced with our original Conservation Rooflights. Sitting flush to the roofline with fine detailing and authentic features, such as glazing clips and exposed hinges, the rooflights complement the architecture and charm of the property whilst bringing an abundance of natural light.
Awarded ‘Best Newcomer’ in the Food and Travel Awards 2021, the Double Red Duke is one of Oxfordshire’s most iconic inns and listed by The Telegraph as one of the best restaurants outside of London.Â
This project gallery showcases how a heritage building can be enhanced by carefully specified rooflights that respect the original architecture while delivering modern performance. Explore the balance of old and new, light and structure that defines Double Red Duke.
To maximise natural light whilst maintaining the historic character of the building, the owners specified Conservation Rooflights from The Rooflight Co that meet modern performance benchmarks whilst integrating seamlessly into a heritage context. With a unit U-Value of 1.4 W/m²K, the glazing maintains high thermal performance, and the slim steel frame references cast-iron heritage rooflights.Â
Internally, the rooflights have a frameless finish thanks to plasterboard finishing up to the timber linings. Externally, they sit flush with the roof tiles, ensuring minimal visual impact on the historic roofscape. This attention to detail allows the property to retain its heritage aesthetic whilst benefiting from modern daylighting and ventilation.Â
Set within the storied architecture of the Cotswolds, Double Red Duke stands as an example of how a heritage building can be sensitively upgraded. The combination of architectural restoration, performance rooflights, and design detail has helped preserve the inn’s character whilst elevating the guest experience.
